Microsoft Office for Mac – Officially Available?

Getting the latest version of Microsoft Office (Office 365) is simple for Mac. You can download it from the Mac App Store and this link will take you there. However, you have to opt-in for the one month trial version or purchase a subscription to use the app suite. You can do this from the Microsoft Products page. Click on this link to see the pricing and plans. Office 365 comes with 6 apps – Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Excel, OneNote, Outlook and OneDrive. Microsoft Office Alternatives For Mac

Microsoft Office is great, but it can dissuade people from buying it because of the price. The Office 365 suites start at $69.99 a year and the subscription model does not sit well with a lot of customers. In this section, I’ve included a list of apps that can be used as an alternative to Microsoft’s offerings.

1. iWork

iWork is Apple’s answer to the Microsoft Office suite. It offers Keynote, Pages, and Numbers as a replacement for PowePoint, Word, and Excel respectively. The best part about these apps is that they can import and export Office files as long as you are not using Mac-only fonts. Unlike the Office 365 suite, iWork comes pre-installed on your Mac and you can use it for free. The apps are not as feature-filled as Microsoft’s suite, but they are extremely easy to use and should be enough for a lot of people.

2. LibreOffice

LibreOffice is possibly my favorite Microsoft Office alternative for Mac. It has a design that is reminiscent of the older MS Office designs and it’s simple to use too. It is the successor to OpenOffice and contains Writer, Calc, Impress, Draw, Base, Math, and Charts. The Writer app is used to create and edit documents while Calc is the Excel replacement. Impress is a great tool for creating presentations, Draw is used for graphics and diagrams, and Base is a database manager. Math is awesome for editing formulas and Charts is a powerful app used to create charts. All of these apps are great for beginners as well as professionals.

FreeOffice by Softmaker is one of the best Microsoft Office alternatives for Mac. It has Textmaker, Planmaker, and Presentations as alternatives to Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint. It works well with Office files and you won’t run into any issues there.

4. G Suite

If you do a lot of collaborative work, then G Suite is the best set of apps for you. While not as feature-rich as the Office 365 suite, the G suite lets everyone simultaneously work on a project and you can easily import and export Office files. You don’t get standalone desktop apps, but you do get beautiful templates and Google’s search engine. There are a ton of tools included in this package. The most important ones are:

  1. Gmail- Business version of Gmail.
  2. Chat- Secure personal messaging.
  3. Docs- Word Processor.
  4. Slides- Presentation creator.
  5. Sheets- Spreadsheet app.

You can check out the prices here. The basic G Suite starts at $6 per user per month. You can also try it out for 14 days for free.

5. Office Online

Office Online is a web version of Office 365 and you can use it for free. You don’t get a desktop app, but you can do document editing and presentation builders. This is a very basic version of the Office 365 suite, but it will get the job done if you are a student. You can easily share, create and do collaborative work and all you need is a Microsoft account. You get access to Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook and OneNote.
